About Me:
When you ask the average person who their hero is, some of the common answers you may inquire are Superman, Michael Jackson and even Martin Luther King, Jr. But when you ask far from average rapper Gerald Walker the same question the answer you get isn’t typical but yet one of the most logical.
Walker’s hero just happens to be the man we all know as Jesus Christ and not necessarily because he’s a super religious Jesus freak, but because of the impact Jesus had on history, similar to the impact Gerald plans to have on the music game.
“When he [Jesus Christ] hit the scene he was new, refreshing, brought different aspects no one had perceived and spoke words no one had heard. Whether one believes he is the "messiah" or not he undoubtedly and undeniably had one of the biggest impacts on history,” states Walker.
A true music lover and overall philosopher Walker was born July 14th, 1987 at Mercy Hospital in Chicago, IL. He was raised in Bellwood, Illinois until age 14 when he moved to Milwaukee, WI, with his mother. While in Milwaukee he attended high school at Riverside University High School and upon graduating he made the decision to pursue his musical passions seriously and began writing.
He went on to attend Columbia College in Chicago where he studied graphic design. It was at Columbia that his hunger for music grew as he was surrounded by musically inclined classmates, professors, friends and other surrounding inspirations.
Although it wasn’t until college that his fascination for music begin to grow it was as a child that he first fell in love with music. Throughout adolescence he was heavily involved in church and learned audio acoustic engineering while there. Of course just as many people gain musical inspirations from their parents same went for Walker. He got into music early by listening to old cassette tapes from his mother. Therefore his music is heavily influenced by smooth jazz, contemporary gospel and R&B.
Fall of 2008 he was presented with an opportunity that changed his outlook on music and served as a catalyst for the sound he delivers to musical fans everywhere. He got the chance to go on tour with one of his favorite bands Paramore who was on tour with No Doubt at the time. No he wasn’t an opening act; rather he served as part of the stage crew. But it was in that moment that he found his sound, because although he is classified as a hip-hop artist he approaches everything else with a punk rock mindset.
Upon completing the tour Walker returned home refreshed, re-inspired and ready to work. He released his debut mixtape, Gerald Walker's Evening Out With Your Girlfriend, in September of 2009. The mixtape includes appearances from Matt and Kim, Will.I.Am, Ayọ, and The Arctic Monkeys and draws heavy inspiration from Fall Out Boy’s album “Fall Out Boy’s Evening Out With Your Girlfriend.” The mixtape highlights Walker's trend of lengthy, hilarious titles and even more ridiculous lyrics with punk rock influences, which he has claimed as his musical signature.
The mixtape helped create a buzz and spread the word about G. Walker to magazines, college campuses and blogs all over the place. Since beginning his musical journey Walker has been featured in many publications including URB Magazine, Stuck Magazine, The Art of Rhyme, 2dopeboyz.com, illRoots.com, University of Illinois Chicago Magazine and many more.
According to feedmecoolshit.com “There are many aspiring emcees representing hip-hop, however, none have the combined charisma, cadence, lyricism, and a knack for delivery like Gerald Walker.”
Reporter Been Wineka of The Daily Tar Heel calls Walker “smooth” and refers to him as “someone who seems like they would steal your chick.” He also makes mention to the great song titles Walker has made his signature such as “Half of Your Life Is F-ing Up, The Other Half is Dealing With It,” off of Walker’s mixtape “Evening Out With Your Girlfriend.”
There is a lot that could be said about Walker, but overall his music speaks for him. It tells his story pulling inspiration from life experiences, friends, family, love and anything else that he feels needs to be heard. He stays inspired by not only old school artists but new age artist as well. His musical loves include everyone from Marvin Gaye, Anita Baker, Sade, George Benson, Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin to Drake, Little Brother, Paramore and yes, Fall Out Boy.
He is currently working on his latest mixtape “I Remember When This All Meant Something,” dropping summer 2010 and his plans are to grow as a song-writer for other artist, begin touring and taking his music international and overall just developing himself more as an artist, man and human being. And through the midst of it all he is going to continue making music even if only a few people really listen and understand what he’s saying. Because it’s not about how many people listen or believe but rather the impact you have on the lives you seek to touch. Of course Jesus taught him that lesson.
